Letter to self: Embrace Trust

Dear Current Self,

I’ve taken some time to reflect on our entrepreneurship journey, and I can’t help but feel a bit disheartened by some of the perspectives that were felt. I know that there’s been a fair amount of disappointment and hurt experienced, which has led to a somewhat cynical outlook on people. While pain can significantly shape our perceptions, I want you to still firmly believe that kindness and goodness exist in the world.

I hope you never resort to coercion or leverage in interactions, I hope you continue to cultivate a more trusting and open approach no matter what. Despite the challenges we’ve faced, we must believe that maintaining faith in humanity can lead to more meaningful connections. I genuinely wish for us to encounter the kindness and sincerity we deserve, and when we do, I hope we can embrace it with open hearts.

With love and hope, Future Self

Reflecting on the challenges I’ve faced in my past 8 years, I’ve had to navigate through many situations that I never anticipated or wished for. Much like tech debt, HR debt accumulates too and it eats you up inside.

There are moments when I find myself wondering about the path not taken. Perhaps if I had chosen differently, I could have maintained a more carefree and naive way of life. I envision myself clocking out at 6 p.m. every day without a single worry on my mind, embracing the simplicity of routine. I imagine building a family, finding joy in the ordinary moments of marriage and parenthood.

But the truth is, I don’t view the world through the same lens anymore. The journey of entrepreneurship has changed me, altering my perspective in ways I never could’ve imagined. It’s exposed me to the harsh realities of the business world, forcing me to confront challenges and make difficult decisions that have left their mark on my psyche.

One of the toughest aspects has been having to make difficult decisions, such as letting people go against their will or navigating through betrayals from those I trusted. It’s a sobering realization that these situations can happen to anyone, regardless of how prepared or strong we believe ourselves to be. Each time, it catches me off guard and leaves me feeling unprepared for the emotional toll it takes.

While I’ve undoubtedly grown stronger over the years, the challenges have also become increasingly complex. From simple personnel changes to legal battles with former employees, each ordeal leaves its mark on my emotional well-being. Despite the common refrain that it’s just business and not personal, the truth is that it cuts deeply.

I’ve witnessed firsthand how even the most seasoned professionals can be deeply affected by changes in their company. Whether it’s a CEO resigning or an employee leaving for a competitor, the emotional impact is undeniable. No matter how experienced or successful we may be, we’re all susceptible to the sting of loss and change.

In the case of people leaving the company, I’ve come to realise that it’s not that we begrudge others their progress or success in life. Rather, it’s the mix of emotions that accompanies these transitions. There’s the sense of loss for the hard work and investment put into training someone, the fear of potential losses for the business, and the burden of shouldering the workload alone once again. It’s a journey from the comfort zone to discomfort, a transition that is never easy but often necessary for growth and progress.

I want to just shout out to every single HR person out there. Your job is really under appreciated. It truly is a thankless job. I thank you for what you do.

Also, to my co-founders Jacky and Armand, thank you.
