Navigating Purpose: Evolution of the Meaning of Success

Interestingly, as I continue on my reflections I’ve found that my perspective on success have changed.

Back in 2012, during my early exposure to the startup world at Cradle Fund, I was captivated by the idea of building something from scratch and witnessing it grow— like a seed evolving into a tree. Working with startups in Singapore further fueled my excitement, as I associated growth with milestones like series A and B funding, leading to eventual exits. I eagerly anticipated experiencing this journey within my own company someday.

However, reality set in as I realized my company wasn’t following the trajectory of a “high-growth startup.” Progress was slow, almost at a snail’s pace, leading to stress and feelings of failure in the initial years. Despite this, I persisted, continuing to pour my efforts into the venture. And now, reflecting on how I’m doing career wise, and maturing in my understanding of success, I feel like I’m doing fairly well. Not monetarily, but my startup is providing jobs to Gen Zs and we are contributing to the industry in meaningful ways.

My perception of success as a woman also underwent a transformation. Initially, I pictured success as a woman meant achieving a thriving career, a loving partner, and a family with children. While I’ve achieved career success somewhat and found a supportive partner, the absence of children and marriage initially felt like shortcomings in the traditional sense. Yet, I’ve come to embrace and appreciate my relationship and the freedom it affords me to pursue other endeavors.

I have a new ambition (birthed since two weeks ago) to organize a program sending 20 college students from Malaysia to Ivy League schools for a two-week experience. Through my work at SushiVid, I’ve observed the talent and hunger among students from less privileged backgrounds. Empowering them with opportunities at prestigious institutions can significantly impact Malaysia’s workforce and mitigate brain drain. While unconventional, I believe this initiative could contribute more to our nation’s progress. Perhaps I might pursue this as a social enterprise at some point.

As time passes, I feel that my definition of success has evolved beyond monetary achievements and familial milestones. It now encompasses impact, empowerment, and the pursuit of meaningful contributions to society.

Disclaimer: I’m not saying this won’t change, it might evolve over time as my goals shift with time.
